Our history

How it all began

Wilhelm Ortlieb, innkeeper and postman at the Hotel Post in Waldsee, had a good feeling when he came to Oberstdorf from a hike over the Widderstein in 1903.
As a far-sighted, progressive innkeeper with an ever-growing family, he made the decision to acquire a larger hotel in an up-and-coming spa town.
A chance change of hotel owner brought the opportunity and in 1903 he leased the Hotel Mohren on the market square with the right of first refusal.
The opportunity arose to purchase a plot of land outside the village with a full view of the Oberstdorf mountains and so Wilhelm Ortlieb built his hotel in 1904 and was able to open it in time for the summer season on July 5, 1905.

How it went on

Wilhelm Ortlieb took over the hotel from his father in 1920 and continued to run the business with his wife Else with increasing success.
The highlight of that era was probably the visit of the Dutch royal family with Queen Wilhelmina, Crown Princess Juliane and Prince Heinrich in February 1930.
But other guests and well-known personalities also adorn the guest book and have enjoyed staying at the “Wittelsbacher Hof” again and again over the decades.
The heyday of this period came to an abrupt end with the outbreak of the Second World War.
Although the family was initially able to continue running the hotel, they were forced to give up in 1943.
The hotel was confiscated and only reopened in 1949.

The House of Wittelsbach is one of the oldest German highnobilitygeschlechter

It is named after its ancestral seat in the 12th century, Wittelsbach Castle.
For centuries, the counts palatine, later dukes, electors and kings of Bavaria emerged from it, as did the counts palatine of the Rhine, who were electors of the Holy Roman Empire as rulers of the Electoral Palatinate.

The first years began with a modest start but with the full commitment of parents and children.
This was followed by years of renovation work and major conversions and extensions over the following decades.
Wolfgang ran the reception, his wife Ursula looked after the well-being of the guests and Ilse, Wolfgang’s sister, was responsible for the commercial department and the kitchen.

In 2005, Maximilian Ortlieb took over the management on the occasion of the 100th anniversary and today he and his wife Keily look after all his guests and employees.
